SWIMMY MIXED MEDIA COLLAGES
The young artists in Kindergarten made these mixed media collages inspired by the book Swimmy, by Leo Leoni. While reading the book in the art studio, we noticed the techniques that Leoni used to create his illustrations.
For this project, the students first stamped the background. Then after observing photographs of fish closely, they created these collages of their own fish and other sea creatures. They created their own shapes for the fish and added patterns and details.

STAMPING SNOWFLAKES
Kindergarten artists continued practicing their stamping techniques using found materials like cardboard and bottle caps. This time they considered radial symmetry when designing a unique snowflake. We looked at Steven Kellogg’s beautiful illustrations in the book Snowflakes Fall.

STAMPING ROBOTS
In the art studio we read the counting book, 1 Robot Lost His Head. Then students used found materials to stamp shapes and create their own unique robot characters.

LIGHT AND COLOR INVESTIGATIONS
1st grade artists explored transparent materials when making these and colorful suncatchers. Not only did they observe the way light moves through these materials but also how the colors overlap and create new ones. This investigation will help prepare them for making shadow puppets later this year. These projects allign with the light and sound science standards of first grade.
FALL LEAF PAINTINGS
First grade artists drew Fall leaves from observation, noticing the shapes, lines, pattern and symmetry. Then, they practiced mixing colors and painted their drawings with these vibrant colors.

MIXED MEDIA PAINTINGS
The young artists in Pre-K first started off making these paintings using oil pastel resist technique. They concentrated on cool colors and experimented with mixing the colors. Then they layered by glueing tissue paper shapes and finally stamped circles using found materials like paper towel rolls and marker caps.

EXPERIMENTING WITH WATERCOLOR
Young artists in Pre-K have been doing a lot of experimenting with watercolor including exploring and mixing colors.
